Could Big Data Start a Healthcare Revolution?

October 14 2014

Healthcare Week at AsiaPac14 was extraordinarily successful! – 1200 people attended from countries around the world, and 80% of attendees were there to evaluate new technologies.

What was clear from listening to the attendees is that data is going to be changing the healthcare landscape in a very dramatic way. Healthcare providers are going to need to be more aware of patients in context, particularly as access to healthcare expands, and the wearables industry is going to provide more and more of that context – and more and more data – as the devices are adopted and get more use in clinical settings.  But an overwhelming amount of data doesn’t mean that it’s actually useful for healthcare professionals.  The secret to unlocking big data’s potential is to turn it into narratives that can be acted upon for positive outcomes.

One of the big challenges for big data projects is integrating the data into existing systems. For example, many businesses find that the longer that data sits unused, the more value it loses.  coming in from social media or clickstream sources depends on timely action to create valuable insights; those insights lose their interest the longer they go unacted upon.  But batch processing of data often takes place on a weekly basis, which means that customer leads or audience insights can be over a week old by the time they’re inputted into an actionable form.

MuleSoft offers Anypoint Platform™, a unified connectivity platform that helps companies solve both high-velocity and high-variety data integration challenges. This platform can provide solutions to integrate data into your existing systems, whether they are on-premises, in the cloud, or both.  And it can capture, ingest, and process data in real time, providing timely insights and context important for establishing relationships with customers and partners.  Finally, Anypoint Platform simplifies connections to NoSQL databases, making it easier to see and understand data from typical legacy systems.

Having access to data is great, but without understanding what it truly means for the patient, it won’t make that much difference in the patient-provider relationship.  Learn more about how our connectivity platform works in the healthcare industry, as well as our data integration solutions.  We’re on the cusp of a revolution in healthcare; getting data in the right place at the right time could have a profound effect on patient outcomes.
