The Chief Information Officer’s new role

Much has been written about the transformation of the Chief Information Officer, but as the world is transformed by the digital revolution, the CIO finds himself or herself at the center of extraordinary change. Technology has fundamentally altered the business of doing business. The emergence of an always-on, always-connected world means that old business models are being disrupted, consumers are demanding more, and the world is smaller and more connected than ever before.

The effect on the modern enterprise is profound. Ray Wang, founder and principal analyst of the Constellation Group, Inc, has said, “digital disruption is creating winner-takes- all markets—the past five years have shown the difference between those who invested in digital transformation and those who have not. Look at Amazon versus Borders, or Netflix versus Blockbuster. Digital Darwinism is unkind to those who wait.”

These changes require a shepherd who can lead businesses through the transformation brought about by digital disruption, and due to their skillsets, CIOs are ideally placed to be that leader. In fact, the Chief Information Officer may be transforming into the Chief Innovation Officer – a digital provocateur willing to make big changes to reap the big rewards offered by the digital revolution.
