Health organizations are adopting cloud technology at an ever-accelerating speed. Health organizations spent $3.73 billion on cloud technology in 2015, and that number is expected to increase to $9.5 billion in 2020. According to HIMSS Analytics, healthcare organizations are using cloud apps to exchange healthcare information, provide patient empowerment tools, and provide back office functions like email and Office 365. Health organizations are increasingly willing to trust the cloud with PHI (protected health information).
However, with the move to the cloud comes concerns. Tom Andriola, the CIO of of the University of California system (and a former healthcare CIO) says that “health care cloud migration involves a slow, methodical conversation because of the vast amounts of personal data hospitals maintain. In particular, the move toward electronic health records requires a lot of time.” The HIMSS Analytics survey noted that the top challenges that healthcare organizations face when moving to the cloud are ensuring uptime and performance, delivering on compliance and SLAs, and offering good technical support.
