The pandemic showed us just how fast things can change. In a matter of weeks, we completely shifted businesses and employee operations and had no choice but to adapt. But no industry was more impacted than healthcare. As healthcare organizations work toward a digital future, speed, agility, and connectivity have emerged as the key components in driving the best-in-class care outcomes. MuleSoft helps organizations stay agile and share data across various systems. Below, we’ll share three customer stories of healthcare companies using MuleSoft to innovate, improve experiences, and scale in their unique digital transformation journeys.
3 healthcare integration case studies
#1. Hologic
Hologic is a global healthcare and diagnostic company. They produce market-leading products for early detection and intervention with a strong position in women’s health. The organization provides its sales and support teams with real-time data to further improve the customer experience.
“Technology is the enabler for materializing ideas and innovations.”
Vasil Valkov, Director, Software Development & DevOps, Hologic
As their company digitally matured, Hologic needed to create a hybrid approach to connect both their on-prem ERP system and cloud data sources in one place. As their teams were looking for an integration solution, they needed one that was easy for their developers to use, had pre-built connectors available, and was reuse-friendly. That’s why they chose MuleSoft.
With MuleSoft, the Hologic developer teams were able to quickly stand up a Field Service Engineer iOS app that gave field engineers the right tools on the go. Additionally, they built a browser version of that app for their service admins to perform capabilities while in the office on a computer. The UI was built within Salesforce using Web Components and called the same Mule APIs as the Field Service Engineer iOS app. Though these two projects were completely separate, Hologic was able to harness the power of reuse through their API-led connectivity integration approach to save time and money.
Hologic didn’t stop there. The company also implemented Salesforce Sales Cloud and Service Cloud alongside MuleSoft to improve patient and employee experiences. Using API-led integration and connecting the various applications that Hologic uses, the sales and service teams can operate more efficiently and drive revenue from service touchpoints.
As a result, Hologic deploys projects 3x faster and is servicing 180+ apps globally through all branches of the corporation.
#2. Nebraska Medicine
Nebraska Medicine implemented MuleSoft to further its digital transformation strategy. One of the goals of this strategy was to have contact center agents use Salesforce Health Cloud for inbound call handling. Prior to this initiative, the contact center agents had to toggle between five different applications during a single call.
By implementing MuleSoft, the organization gave contact center agents the ability to automatically create a patient in Salesforce. This saved them time during each call as it removed the manual process of going to the EMR system to create the patient in Salesforce themselves.
“From a technology standpoint, we added an asset that can be reused for other use cases which will save us time and resources for future projects as we won’t have to build this asset from scratch,” says Audrey Honeycutt, Enterprise Architect at Nebraska Medicine.
Nebraska Medicine aimed to improve call response times and patient satisfaction, with the main goal of streamlining the call center workflow and providing a one-stop shop for agents. Nebraska Medicine selected MuleSoft as the integration platform for this project because of its ease of use, ability to perform secure data transfers, and for reusable API capabilities and implementation templates for healthcare providers included in the MuleSoft Accelerator for Healthcare.
#3. McKesson
McKesson is an industry leader in pharmaceutical distribution, clinical services, and healthcare technology solutions. McKesson was looking to digitize its customer ordering experience and connect its siloed systems and data sets using API-led integration.
“The data sets are very non-homogeneous and not consistent across business lines because of acquisition, because of disparate systems, because of different market dynamics,” says McKesson CIO, Ranjit Gill, “Being able to take that data and roll it up to get a corporate level view is a significant challenge.”
Using APIs to unlock core systems and data, McKesson was able to access and act upon that data to make business decisions. This enables the company to meet the goals — such as driving better patient outcomes, responding to customer needs, and modernizing its offerings.
MuleSoft enabled McKesson to foster a much higher level of data agility where teams could make quicker decisions and bring forward the required investment in a much shorter time frame. “It’s allowing us to build a platform for the future that’s going to allow us to operate in an agile way and be flexible and adaptive to the changing needs of the external world and the organization we’re in as well,” says Gill.
Conclusion
Though each of these three healthcare companies had unique challenges to solve, they were able to use MuleSoft to meet their original needs and build a strong digital foundation. From creating new applications to improving patient experiences to driving data agility, healthcare integration needs can seem endless, especially for healthcare companies beginning their digital transformation journey. That’s why it’s critical to choose the right tools.
