Connectivity is critical for government and education organizations to provide essential services to citizens and constituents. The problem is that many public sector organizations are plagued with inefficient workflows, outdated legacy systems, and manual processes that all cost time and resources.

Learn more about how three public sector organizations are partnering with MuleSoft to modernize the essential government services they provide:

#1 City & County of Denver

Prior to MuleSoft, processing parking tickets, arrests, bookings, and other services within the City and County of Denver (CCD) required logging into multiple systems and manually filling out paperwork, which led to many hours of work and slow processes. The city aimed to make several of its critical services available virtually, establish a digital citizen experience, and reduce its number of manual processes.

To accomplish this, the CCD team needed to connect legacy and cloud-based systems across more than 50 agencies, implement new technology, and streamline processes. With Anypoint Platform, they used APIs to connect hundreds of legacy systems to facilitate real-time data integration for 311 requests, planning permits, service orders, and more. As a result, residents of Denver could renew their driver’s license, apply for a permit, and conduct other government-related services online. Additionally, when COVID-19 struck the state, the team was tasked with getting a testing site up and running in just one week. Because they reused many of the APIs from other projects, they quickly built a custom web portal for citizens to access testing site information and book an appointment.

INSEAD, one of the leading and largest graduate business schools, had more than 100 siloed applications across its landscape. This overloaded staff with manual work, drove up IT operations costs, and created an experience that didn’t meet student and faculty expectations.

When INSEAD first implemented the Canvas Learning Management System, staff had to enter the same course data into two separate systems. INSEAD used MuleSoft to connect its systems with an API-led approach. This enabled the team to reuse a single API for multiple projects — automating processes related to student scheduling as well as enrollment. This eliminated many manual processes employees were performing and created a single source of truth for student schedules.

The INSEAD team also improved sales operations by implementing Salesforce Sales Cloud and modernizing the existing legacy systems. With the power of APIs, staff can securely access student information that is derived from several different systems within Sales Cloud — enhancing access and increasing employee efficiency

#3 Indiana Department of Child Services

The Indiana Department of Child Services’ (INDCS) aims to provide best-in-class services to children in need. This involves researching cases, evaluating applications, and organizing foster care for more than a quarter million child cases per year — each of which require the collaboration of over 4,000 staff members. INDCS needed to digitize its processes to provide these services quickly to children in need and increase staff efficiency.

INDCS’ first project was to implement a national electronic system to exchange case data with courts, families, and other agencies across state lines. With MuleSoft, INDCS securely migrated case data from its legacy database into Salesforce using APIs. INDCS also wanted to create a comprehensive view of each child’s records in its existing custom-built system. The team reused APIs from the first project to pull data from dental, immunization, health, and other records for cases into a custom web portal for case managers to view every aspect of the child’s care and service needs.

When COVID-19 required offices to shut down, INDCS took swift action to protect caseworkers and the children under their care, which required data from the state’s Department of Health. By reusing APIs built for previous projects, the team quickly integrated with Salesforce and Tableau to pull personal protective equipment (PPE) information, immunization records, and other data from the state’s Department of Health.

Government modernization in action

As you’ve seen in the above case studies, partnering with MuleSoft to adopt an API-led approach can help modernize government and public sector processes and deliver a connected experience for citizens, students, and more.

We believe it’s because of the success that customers like the City and County of Denver, INSEAD and the Indiana Department of Child Services have found with MuleSoft that we are recognized by Gartner as a Leader in the Magic Quadrant reports for Enterprise iPaaS and for Full Life Cycle API Management and are now ranked #1 in the Full Life Cycle API Management segment worldwide based on 2020 total software revenue, holding a 11.6% share of revenue in the segment.
