The need to share healthcare information electronically is not new — but it has become essential in our COVID-19 reality. Whether it is across different information systems, devices, and applications or across organizational, regional, and national boundaries — the timely and seamless access of information is paramount to optimize the health of individuals and populations.
When building MuleSoft Accelerator for Healthcare, we wanted to make sure we were designing a solution for both the immediate short-term needs of healthcare entities and long-term needs, which is why we provide both HL7 V2 and FHIR R4 options. And when our healthcare customers create innovative solutions that can help other healthcare providers dealing with the same challenges, we are committed to bridging those connections.
Leveraging the power of APIs for COVID-19 public health reporting
Due to COVID-19, many labs, health systems, and other care providers have mandates to share test results with public health entities. This helps government agencies keep an accurate count of those who are infected, ensure proper follow up and care guidance, and ultimately provide a framework for vaccine management and distribution when the time comes.
Recently, a large California-based healthcare entity chose Salesforce and MuleSoft to securely transmit test results back to its full ecosystem of healthcare partners, with reporting their test results back to CalREDIE, one of its key partners. With MuleSoft, this organization was able to securely share patient records and test results from their internal Salesforce instance to rapidly report data directly to the California Public Health Department. The California Public Health Department can now quickly leverage these test results to identify hot spots of the virus, install preventative measures, and make data-driven decisions around reopening certain areas or adjusting shelter-in-place restrictions.
Given this is a critical use case for many labs and other healthcare entities around the world, MuleSoft is providing APIs and integration templates that enable healthcare organizations to accelerate this integration through the Accelerator for Healthcare. Regardless of regional and local differences, you can modify this template to work with whatever endpoint is required to follow a successfully-implemented integration pattern for reporting test results to public health agencies.
We are providing an implementation template comprising a custom HL7 schema to ensure that the messages are compliant with HL7 V2.5.1 with additional constraints imposed by CalREDIE, as well as a pre-configured web service connector with necessary placeholders for seamless connectivity with CalREDIE. The reference architecture including the logical view and the sequence diagram is also included in the solution.
Accelerators complement our broader Anypoint Platform capabilities
Anypoint Platform provides all the necessary tools as part of the Healthcare Toolkit to handle both clinical and non-clinical integration needs, and the Accelerator for Healthcare perfectly complements this by providing pre-built API specifications, prescriptive implementation templates, and a huge library of RAML fragments, data types and traits. Let’s take a closer look at how Anypoint Platform and Accelerator for Healthcare helps in your clinical implementations.
HL7 EDI Connector
HL7 EDI Connector gives you a convenient way to read and write HL7 V2 messages. It includes pre-built message packs for v2.1, v2.2, v2.3.1, v2.3, v2.4, v2.5, v2.5.1, v2.6, 2.7, 2.7.1, 2.8, and 2.8.1. It also includes the critical ability to define your own schemas or customize the base HL7 schemas.
HL7 MLLP Connector
Within Healthcare IT, there is often a need to use a minimalistic OSI-session layer framing protocol to interact with the legacy EHR systems. The Minimal Lower Layer Protocol (MLLP), supports only direct connections between a sender and a receiver, and there is no authentication process. HL7 MLLP Connector quickly enables the desired connectivity.
APIs built with the Accelerator for Healthcare can be quickly deployed to CloudHub — a global, fully-managed, multi-tenanted, secure, and highly available platform for APIs and integrations. They can be secured with out of box security policies.
