At MuleSoft, we believe one of the most important things we can do is “make it awesome” — smashing obstacles to create the best experience possible for our employees, customers, and developers. We did just that in 2017. It was a big year for us; our IPO in March was exciting and rewarding as a huge milestone for both current and former Muleys. But, as our CEO Greg Schott says, it was the first step in the bigger journey of creating lasting greatness. There were so many ways that every team in every region worked together to pull off some incredible accomplishments this year. Here are six of the big ways that Muleys worked together to make it awesome in 2017.

We continued  our rapid growth by hiring a record number of exceptional Muleys

Our number one priority has always been hiring, and for good reason; we can’t be a successful company without exceptional people who share the same passion and vision for building a great company together. This year, we hired a record number of people and now have over 1,100 Muleys in 12+ countries across the globe! 2017 was also the 5th consecutive year we were named to the Deloitte Fast 500 as one of the fastest growing companies in North America.

To keep with our pace of growth and make deeper regional investments, we opened 3 new office spaces and expanded 6 offices this year. We built new teams in Pilar, Argentina; Cologne, Germany; and Reading, UK. We also opened brand new office spaces for existing teams that have grown a ton in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Buenos Aires, Sydney, and Singapore. We’re ready to welcome even more Muleys to the team in 2018!

We invested in our employees to make MuleSoft the best place to work

As a fast-growing company, keeping the culture we’re known for while growing at such a fast rate  is one of the many challenges we embrace as a team. We were so humbled this year to be recognized as one of the best places to work 5 times over: as the #1 Top Workplace in the Bay Area, one of the Top 5 Best Places to work in Argentina and the Bay Area, Best Tech Culture. Since we bring in so many new people every week and open offices all over the world, it’s critical to maintain connections all over the world. . Our annual all-company offsite, MeetUp, is a key way we stay aligned on vision and build relationships. This year’s MeetUp was our biggest yet, and the event continues to serve as a critical part of our overall program for learning and development across the organization.

But it’s not just all about us – MuleSoft wants to give back to our local communities as well. Our Global Month of Service—Muleys Give Back—provided 47 volunteering opportunities to Muleys in every office around the world.  Our teams in San Francisco and Buenos Aires grew their involvement with the women in the tech community. In Buenos Aires, we sponsored 4 Meetups with Chicas en Tecnologia where our own engineers presented and spoke with girls learning to code. It was also our first year attending the Grace Hopper Celebration Conference, connecting with 16,000 women in computer science and technology.

We created amazing results with our customers

Partnering with our customers and working with them to achieve incredible changes in their speed and agility by using MuleSoft is the reason we all get up in the morning. Take a look at 6 new customer videos to see how companies like ASICS and Wells Fargo are transforming their infrastructure and building lasting connections with their customers using MuleSoft. We were thrilled to see our customer Addison Lee named a Disruptive Tech Leader for the innovative way they scale their infrastructure using MuleSoft’s . Our customers were often in the news, and we loved seeing customers like McDonald’s, ASOS, and Christchurch City Council recognized in major IT publications about how changing the way they think about IT is having a massive impact on their overall business. Finally, we put our customers onstage with us at major events around the world.

We brought application networks to the main stage in over 20 cities

2017 was our biggest year ever for MuleSoft events. At each one, we bring our leadership team, experts, and customers front and center to talk about more than just integration, but the long-term vision of changing the way businesses think about IT so they can build software faster and for scale. Our flagship event, CONNECT, had over 3,000 attendees; it was the biggest turnout and  matched the momentum of the event itself. This year, included 4 different tracks for technical and business audiences, over 50 breakout sessions, 25 partner sessions, 100 speakers including Dr. Rebecca Parsons, CTO of Thoughtworks, and Tom Keiser, CIO of Zendesk, and MuleSoft certification courses and hackathon projects in our Dev Zone. Plus, attendees could see 3 robots in MuleSoft CTO Uri Sarid’s demo of application networks in action.

Our Summit series invites CIOs around the world to have interactive, hands-on discussions with their peers about integration challenges and how to implement API-led connectivity so they can change and innovate faster. With Summits in 20 cities—from Oslo to Auckland to Austin—our message around transforming the IT operating model through application networks reached a new level of global scale. We also had another great year at Dreamforce, presenting 4 sessions in the expo hall, connecting with 171,000+ attendees and handing out hundreds of our famous squishy mules.

We released category-defining, innovative products 

Not only do we invest in using cutting-edge technology to build category-defining products, but we lead with a vision to completely overhaul the IT operating model from a traditional project-based approach to one that centers on making every new asset reusable and scalable. With this methodology, Anypoint Platform solves big problems for our customers, helping them close the IT delivery gap between the demands of changing technology and the capacity of IT teams to deliver innovative products. To help our customers continue to make connectivity easy so they can innovate faster, we launched significant product releases this year to better enable the entire organization, not just IT.

Our major Anypoint Platform releases in 2017 included:

  • Embed discovery, reuse, and collaboration through Anypoint Exchange
    As developers create new APIs and assets in Anypoint Design Center, they can now save, discover, and reuse those assets in Anypoint Exchange, which also added developer portal capabilities so that an organization has a one-stop shop to manage and share assets with both internal and external users.
    • Ease of use
      Easy, centralized API design is at the forefront with the ability to save and reuse API fragments, visual API design capabilities that remove the need to code to build APIs, GUI for promoting APIs through different environments, a new web-based flow designer for ad hoc integrators, and auto-conversion of RAML or OASspec into a reusable connector.
  • Enterprise-grade capabilities
    We added support for Canada, Great Britain, and Brazil as our customer base grows globally. Load balancers can now be increased 4x to handle higher throughput and increased payload sizes.
  • 67 new connectors
  • Our Ideas Portal for customers to submit product ideas and vote for ones they’d like to see built.

This year we were named a leader in two Gartner Magic Quadrants: Full Lifecycle API Management and iPaaS for the 4th year in a row, and the only vendor to be named to both. We were also recognized for our culture of innovation with 2 awards: Top 25 Most Innovative Company in ANZ, and the UK Cloud Award for Most Innovative Enterprise Product.

We offered more learning opportunities for a growing developer community

With more than 175,000 developers, our community is more engaged than ever, thanks to refreshing some of our most popular programs, as well as introducing new ones geared toward making it easier for MuleSoft developers to build their skills. Developers in the MuleSoft community are leading over 60 Meetup groups across 115 cities all over the world, teaching each other valuable skills through real-life use cases.
